Eighteen of the twenty-four yachts entered in the Paprec 600 Saint-Tropez completed the non-stop course of around 400 nautical miles in the Mediterranean. The day before the start, and in order to finish on time, the race director, Georges Korhel, had announced a reduction in the course in view of the weather forecasts, which were confirmed with light airs! As a result, we had to play strategically to win the game, and in this game, it was the Class40 MADE IN MIDI with Kito de Pavant and Sandrine Revil who won in real time, crossing the finish line first on Saturday 27 May at 05h 06minutes and 13sec! It was a close and intense race throughout against the Croatian crew on ACI40 with Ivica Kostelic and Darko Prizmic, who finished in second place ahead of BLUE PLANET with Christian Kerl and Luis Brito in the Class40 group. In the solo class, Gerard Guilluy on FURTIF finished first ahead of Michel Sastre on BLUE007 and Pascal Caussil on NABLA. As for the duos, the crew of MILOU with Thomas Filleux and Florian Demaimay finished in first place ahead of ATHOR 5 with Paul and Arnaud Van Gaver. The crew of MARCHER SUR L’EAU with Benoit David and Guillaume Barbet finished third. In the crewed event, the winner was ARCHITEUTHIS with Jacques Silve, Paul Pouderoux, Karine Guillou and Antoine Guillet ahead of the crew of CHAAC 2 with Emmanuel Unguran, Arnold Bos, Nicolas Peyron and Vincent Triacca. The only multihull in the race, DAKOTA with Emmanuel Pironneau and David Thomas Franck Valentin, won a prize. Sponsor of the event, Lionel Péan was keen to present his prize to the youngest crew member in the race, Domenico Caparrotti, who sailed on IMAGIN’ACT-SOCOMEC with Marco GUERRA. As well as having a lot of fun sailing, the winners also received some great rewards, including cash prizes. Next up for the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez is the Rolex Giraglia, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year!
Pierre Roinson, President of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez
During the prize-giving ceremony, the President of the Société Nautique de Saint-Tropez, Pierre Roinson, was keen to thank the event’s title partner from this year onwards, PAPREC, the company behind the new 600 nautical race formula synonymous with great offshore races. “The line-up for this first edition of the PAPREC 600 SAINT TROPEZ 2023 is exceptional, with some great sailing stories to tell, capricious weather, suspense right to the end and some great battles at sea! We were delighted to welcome 24 boats, including 7 Class 40s, 3 duos representing Croatia, Italy, Germany and Portugal, 1 mixed duo and 1 disabled duo, as well as 1 Société Nautique Saint-Tropez duo with Matthieu Foulquiez Gazagnes and Xavier Broers. 8 SOLO boats, including the most loyal of our sailors, Richard Delpeut, with his 9th participation on the clock, 6 DUO boats, including 1 “mixed”, 1 “family: uncle/nephew”, 1 “disabled sailor”, 3 TEAMS, including 1 Catamaran, Emmanuel Pironneau, who is also a loyal sailor with 5 participations on 4 different boats. I’d like to thank the entire team of referees, volunteers and the SNST team for all their hard work, because everyone was on deck day and night to welcome you on your way to and during the race, as well as on your return to Saint-Tropez. Once again, a big well done to everyone, thank you for your participation and we hope to see you all again next year!
Georges Korhel, race director :
“The choice of course turned out to be the right one. There were some great battles along the way, which we followed live. The marker site is working well and we’re going to improve it next year by removing the start line and making the finish line more tangible. We’ve had sailors with disabilities, including one who is visually impaired and one who is hearing impaired, and that’s also enabling us to make progress on communication. The boat inspections went well and more and more boats are compliant. The fact that all the groups are doing the same course was very much appreciated, and above all it’s very reassuring for us. Dates for next year could be brought forward to the end of April.”
Sandrine Revil and Kito de Pavant, 1er Class40 sur MADE IN MIDI
Sandrine Revil (Sailor, member of the French single-handed dinghy team, trainer and solo and double-handed racer in IRC events, including a victory at the SNIM as 1st woman): “Thank you, I’m very happy. The wind was very light and very hard. We had a great battle with the Croatian Class 40 ACI40 which was ahead in the first part. It was my first time sailing this Class40 and with Kito. We had to find our balance and it took a little time to acclimatise. As soon as we reached the Bouches de Bonifacio, we managed to do that and as a result, we were able to concentrate more on the race and we won the second part! The sea was a real aquarium with lots of whales, dolphins…”.
Kito de Pavant : We managed to break free of the grip of the Croatian boat. Victory took a long time to emerge and it wasn’t until the end of day 4 that we managed to put her behind… in the calms on the way up to the west of Corsica. They slalomed along nicely, but when they got too close to the gates, they finally got on board.
Gérard Guilluy, 1st Solo on FURTIF
“I’ve already done the race once and this is my second solo race, so I’m very happy! For this edition, it was great but very committed because I didn’t have any automatic pilot so I had to stay awake. It was a real match race with Blue007 and that meant I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t see the time passing! I like the course and the format of this race. You had to be everywhere. For the anecdote, I caught myself falling asleep changing the spinnaker 20 miles from the finish. For the anecdote, I surprised myself by falling asleep while changing the spinnaker 20 miles from the finish. There’s no mystery to getting into the leading group, just the time to take micro-naps. It’s true that it’s a bit of fun for a lot of hard work, but I enjoyed myself. It was in a handkerchief and the fact that all the competitors see each other during the race is really motivating!”
Thomas Filleux and Florian Demaimay, 1st in Duo on MILOU
3rd participation. There were a lot of twists and turns and a great course around Corsica. I’m very happy to finish on the podium with my friends from the Transquadra (Marcher sur l’eau, Hator…). We were able to see a lot of dolphins and other cetaceans. The race was very well organised and the atmosphere was very friendly and caring! Do we have any plans? Yes, to do the Middle Sea Race one day…
