Halfway point for PAPREC 600 SAINT-TROPEZ

Photos of competitors below

Setting out from Saint-Tropez on Wednesday 24 May bound for Corsica, the competitors in the Paprec 600 Saint-Tropez are expected to cross the finish line on the night of Saturday 27 May. For the time being, the battle between the Class40s, the duos, the solo sailors and the crews continues and nothing is certain. At the start of the evening on 26 May 2023, the MADE IN MIDI yacht with Kito de Pavant and Sandrine Revil was just ahead of its Class 40 rivals. SOLENN FOR PURE OCEAN with Ludovic Gérard is ahead of its solo rivals. HATHOR 5 avec Paul et Arnaud Van Gaver est en tête du groupe des duos. And ARCHITEUTHIS with Jacques Silve is in first place in the crew group. The race director, Georges Korhel, gives an initial update: “After two days of racing, the fleet, led by the Class40s, has passed the mouths of Bonifacio. A complicated first night with sudden shifts and changes in the wind meant that the fleet found itself very bunched up in the early hours of the morning. Thursday did not allow them to be separated and it was as a ‘pack’ that they arrived in the evening off the Giraglia. The boat ‘Marcher sur l’eau’, which had chosen a much more ‘southerly’ route, didn’t take advantage of this and arrived a little further back. The passage of the Giraglia was favourable to the Class 40s, who kept the wind as they began the descent towards Bonifacio. The rest of the fleet had a hard time passing the island because of the very light and changeable conditions. Early in the morning, the wind picked up from the North/East and everyone set off again. Four boats dropped out for various reasons, but never serious ones. According to the routing and the weather forecast, which wasn’t very reliable, the first boats should arrive in Saint-Tropez on Saturday night.

Joel Parisi: “A great experience despite our retirement. Thibaut Lecarpentier dislocated his kneecap on board. We quickly realised that it wasn’t going to be possible. It’s complicated because I would have been alone and it wasn’t ‘safe’ and he was in pain…”

That said, despite our retirement, we’ve learnt a lot! We got off to a great start and the boat was right up there (3rd in Class40 and 3rd overall). The race is well organised and there’s a good atmosphere between the sailors.

We’ve proved to ourselves that the boat is competitive and that our team works well. It’s already been a great experience. It doesn’t call into question our desire to take part in the Transat Jacques Vabre and we’re going to have to review the race programme to cover the 1,200 miles needed to qualify.

This hard blow made us even stronger. The idea behind our project is: “It’s possible with a disability! It’s different, but we can do it. We are also taking this message to the Ulysse classes. We all have the right to have dreams and we have to do everything we can to make them come true!

The boat is a social laboratory, and we’ve even had blind people at the helm. It takes longer to learn, using different methods, but you can do it. There’s a different approach and a different sensibility.
