Sunshine, flat seas, light breezes of 6 to 10 knots: all the indicators were green this Wednesday for the first day of racing in the 52 Super Series Saint-Tropez Sailing Week. A new stage which opens the ball of the 11th season of the 52 Super Series from the 2nd to the 7th of May in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. With two victories under their belts, Interlodge takes the lead in the rankings, Paprec is 10.The season is off to a flying start for Austin and Gwen Fragomen (Interlodge). Winners of the first two races of the 52 Super Series Saint-Tropez Sailing Week, the American crew showed from the outset that they were to be reckoned with. With two good starts, Interlodge took the lead in each of the two races, creating a significant gap with their opponents. “We had a great time. It was my first day of racing with the team. It couldn’t have gone better. With Cam (Cameron Appleton, tactician on Interlodge) and Ian, we worked on the strategy throughout the race and the team allowed us to go very fast,” commented Stephanie Roble who arrived directly from Hyères where she signed a good 2nd place in the 49er FX at the French Olympic Week (SOF). The Interlodge strategist, who will be competing at the 2022 Tokyo Olympics in the 49er FX, added: “The conditions got lighter and lighter and more unstable as the day went on. We tried to stay focused and keep watching what was happening on the water. It was a good start for the crew who had only won one race last season, in Puerto Portals (Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain). On the French side, Paprec, winner of the Spi Ouest France Banque Populaire Grand Ouest in IRC0, finished 10th in this first day of racing. Jean-Luc Petithuguenin’s TP52 Paprec found itself on the wrong side of the first leg of the first race, which it finished last. The second race, whose course was shortened due to the wind, went better for the French, who finished 6th and 10th overall. “Saint-Tropez is great. The weather was superb. I love it. Otherwise, Paprec is starting the season again, the helmsman doesn’t know the boat. We have to make progress. We’re still in this phase of progress with this beautiful boat and we’re very happy to be here”, comments Hugues Destremeau, trimmer on board the TP52 Paprec.
